Extensive tidal flats and saltmarsh bordered by a rare shellbank chenier plain, create at Miranda, a world renowned and very accessible site for migratory and endemic waders.

The Miranda list records 131 bird species including 43 waders. It is the best all-year site for wrybill with up to half the population wintering here. One hour south-east of Auckland, the Miranda Shorebird Centre is both information centre and lodge. Comfortable accommodation includes self-contained units and bunk dormitories with full kitchen facilities. Also extensive displays and dioramas plus natural history library. Visiting or staying at Miranda supports the work of Miranda Naturalists’ Trust which operates the Shorebird Centre.
