Kaikoura Wilderness Walks offers a path of discovery on a comfortable hiking experience through primeval native forests, among pristine mountains, sparkling streams and dramatic alpine landscapes.
This exclusive guided walk takes you through the Puhi Peaks Nature Reserve; a protected Significant Natural Area of International Importance, that is renowned as a haven for a diverse array of wildlife and flora and fauna.
Guests have the option of either a two day, one night or three day, two night all inclusive guided walk. Accommodation is provided at the purpose built Shearwater Lodge, designed with comfort and relaxation in mind. Set in a spectacular alpine valley the Lodge has six guest rooms, accommodating up to twelve on a twin/share basis.
The Puhi Peaks Nature Reserve is home to one of only two of the world’s colonies of the endangered Hutton’s shearwater (Puffinus huttoni), who nest in burrows high in the mountains. The Reserve is also New Zealand’s eastern most habitat for the kea. Other species of bird likely to be seen are the bellbird, fantail, tomtit, pipit, finches, South Island robin, NZ pigeon, NZ falcon, harrier hawk and more. Other wildlife include red deer, chamois and Arapawa sheep which all roam freely in this habitat.
