Mapara bush reserve is a managed area of remnant forest excellent for kokako, long-tailed cuckoo, tomtit and bellbird. Pureora Forest with its ancient Podocarps is one of the best places to see a wide range of bush birds including NZ falcon, kaka, rifleman and yellow-crowned parakeet. A visit to the locally famous Kiwi house native bird park offers a great opportunity to see captive brown, little and great spotted kiwi. For many more native and endemic birds; Lake Rotorua, Taupo and Tongariro National Park are less than 2 hours away.
