Orokonui Ecosanctuary

Orokonui Ecosanctuary is a 307ha nature reserve providing predator free habitat for the conservation of endangered wildlife. The Ecosanctuary provides for observation of particularly South Island (SI) subspecies and those of the Coastal Otago region in their natural habitat including the SI saddleback, rifleman, SI kaka, SI tomtit and the fern bird (pictured). SI robin will be re-introduced in March 2010 and the critically endangered Haast tokoeka kiwi in spring 2010.
Just 20 kilometres north of Dunedin, Orokonui Ecosanctuary is a forest based experience which complements the marine wildlife for which the region is famous – albatross, penguin and sea lion.
Tours with friendly, knowledgeable guides are at 10.30 and 1.30 seven days a week. Bookings are recommended. The Ecosanctuary is open for unguided walking from March 2010.
