More species of coastal and aquatic birds visit Waikanae Estuary Scientific Reserve than any other site in the Wellington District.
Approximately 64 specialised birds visit the estuary at times. Many of which may be seen in their natural habitat.
Stroll along the sand spit /riverbank enjoying the magnificent scenery and the current variety of water fowl which may include—caspian terns, royal spoonbills, shags [five varieties, with some nesting] dabchicks, scaup, herons, shovelers, pukeko and many more species of birds that inhabit this wonderful area.
