Kaikoura Wilderness Walks
Kaikoura Wilderness Walks offers a path of discovery on a comfortable hiking experience through primeval native forests, among pristine mountains, sparkling streams and
dramatic alpine landscapes.
Guests have the option, either of a two-day/one-night or three-day/two-night all inclusive guided walk. Accommodation is provided at the purpose built Shearwater Lodge,
designed with comfort and relaxation in mind. Set in a spectacular alpine valley, the Puhi Peaks Nature Reserve,
and serviced by a modern eco-friendly electricity supply the Lodge has six guest rooms, accommodating up to twelve
on a twin/share basis.
The Puhi Peaks Nature Reserve is home to one of only two colonies in the world of the endangered Hutton’s
shearwater (Puffinus huttoni) which nest in burrows high in the mountains. The Reserve is also New Zealand’s easternmost habitat for the Kea, the famous (or infamous) alpine parrot. Other bird species likely to be seen are the Bellbird, Fantail, Tomtit, NZ Pipit, South Island Robin, NZ Pigeon,
NZ Falcon, Harrier Hawk, introduced finches and more. Other wildlife includes Red Deer, Chamois and Arapawa Sheep which all roam freely in this habitat.
