NEW ZEALAND's BIRDS
Rifleman
(Acanthisitta chloris) - (Titipounamu)
(Photo: Tussock & Beech Ecotours)
Two subspecies are recognised granti on the North Island and chloris on the South Island. They belong to the endemic family of New Zealand wrens the Acanthisittidae, which have no close affinity with any other group of birds. This male rifleman is standing at the entrance to a typical nest hole. We mainly see rifleman in large stands of beech forests in the South Island.
