Rarest of all penguins. Breeds South Westland, Fiordland, Stewart Islands and islands nearby.
Breeding season
July to December
Dispersal migration
Leave colonies mid December/early January. Adults return to moult at breeding sites (up to 20 days) January/March; sometimes along southern coasts; birds at sea until breeding starts
