NEW ZEALAND's BIRDS

Brown teal

(Anas aucklandic) - (Pateke)
Three subspecies of brown teal are recognised, all endemic to New Zealand. The Auckland Island and Campbell Island subspecies are flightless. This duck is also considered seriously threatened, mainly due to predation but also through loss of habitat. We can see brown teal on Tiritiri Matangi Island (a very small number) and on Great Barrier Island in the Hauraki Gulf. On subantarctic trips the Auckland Island brown teal can be seen on Enderby Island in the Auckland Islands.
