Knobs Flat - Accommodation

Come and stay at Knobs Flat for a rich birding experience within walking distance of your accommodation. Lying half way between Te Anau and Milford Sound, Knobs Flat Accommodation is located in the Eglinton Valley in the heart of Fiordland National Park. We offer customised bird watching tours or you can explore the area independently for a great birding experience. Because of its high biodiversity values, the Eglinton has been selected as a site for one of the Department of Conservation’s long-term national research programmes and the valley has been under active conservation management for many years. Introduced predator numbers are low and common forest birds as well as many threatened bird species are breeding successfully. The most recent research programme monitors breeding success and survival of the morepork, New Zealand’s native owl. The Eglinton Valley is one of the very few places in New Zealand where you can see the threatened yellowhead (mohua) within a short walking distance of the road. Other key species that can be seen near the accommodation include falcon, kaka, and black-fronted tern. Forest birds including morepork, rifleman and yellow-crown parakeet (kakariki) are present in high numbers throughout the area. Rare species such as rock-wren and blue duck can be found further up the valley on the road to Milford Sound and a short drive from your accommodation. Knobs Flat Accommodation offers six fully self-contained units as well as a small campsite within the national park. Whether you choose to camp on the forest edge and be woken up by bird song, or enjoy the spectacular vistas of the Eglinton Valley from the comforts of your unit, access to the forest, riverbed and local walking tracks are only a few minutes away. Knobs Flat also has much to offer for those who wish to experience other aspects of the Eglinton Valley and Fiordland National Park. It is a great place to relax for a few days, explore the local walking tracks, go tramping or go trout fishing in the Eglinton River or nearby lakes. The start of many famous walking tracks such as Key Summit, Lake Marian and Gertrude Saddle are only a short drive up the Milford road from Knobs Flat. Your stay at Knobs can also easily be combined with a visit to the spectacular Milford or Doubtful Sounds; go on a cruise or go kayaking for the day and return to Knobs in the evening to relax in one of our comfortable units or at our peaceful campsite.
