One of South Westland’s most compelling attractions, the kotuku or white heron Sanctuary at Whataroa is this bird’s only New Zealand breeding colony. The sanctuary can be visited anytime between October and March. White Heron Sanctuary Tours runs a 2.5 hour tour under concession to the Department of Conservation and is the only operator to the site. The Sanctuary is on the banks of the Waitangi-Roto River and hosts an abundance of other birdlife including the royal spoonbill and the little shag. A Unique Experience
