NEW ZEALAND's BIRDS

Yellowhead

Also known as the bush canary, in flocks it has delightful song of rich flute-notes. Sadly these birds have continued to decline and constrict in range as they struggle to survive in the face of predation by rats and stoats. A hole nester, they are especially vulnerable. They are also hosts to the long-tailed cuckoo which is 10 times it's size. There are a few places where mohua persist on the mainland and they have also been introduced to a number of islands where their future is more secure.
