NEW ZEALAND's BIRDS

South Island kaka

(Nestor meridionalis)

(Photo: Ulva Goodwillie)
Two subspecies are recognised for the North and South Islands, this one from the south is meridionalis. Kaka are a large sociable bird and are easily seen in a group but can sit quietly in the bush when alone. They have a range of calls from harsh screeches and squawks to liquid whistling notes and we often observe them hanging upside down in trees and generally enjoying themselves.
