AULDWOOD BIRDS
“free range” bird guides in Canterbury, one of New Zealand’s most bio-diverse provinces.
We provide individualised bird watching tours for each client, to give them the best chance of finding the birds they especially want to see.
We range from the wild shingle beaches of Canterbury where banded dotterel nest; across the wetlands and estuaries of the Canterbury plains (bittern, marsh crake, white heron, migrant waders), through native forest (brown creeper, mohua/yellowhead, parakeets) and deep into the mountain valleys of the Southern Alps (rock wren, NZ falcon, kea) in search of the many different species of New Zealand birds that make these places their home.
Canterbury is considered the ‘world capital’ of braided river systems, and we are braided river birds specialists. In these distinctive river ecosystems we can find you ngutupare/wrybill (the only bird in the world with a bill that bends sideways), kaki/black stilt (the world’s rarest wading bird), tarāpuka/black-billed gull (an endemic and highly threatened gull species), and the beautiful and seriously under threat tarapirohe/black-fronted tern, plus many others.
We also offer tours of Canterbury birding sites known to host a wide variety of birds. These include:the Ashley-Rakahuri Estuary (some 115 species of birds recorded); Te Waihora/Lake Ellesmere (more than 120 species recorded); the Mackenzie Country (prime kaki/black stilt country within magnificent landscapes); and Otira Valley Arthurs Pass National Park (home of the elusive pīwauwau/rock wren).
With the exception of our Otira Valley tour, all of our locations and birding sites are easy grade, well within the walking capabilities of most people. If you have difficulty walking across wild country, let us know and we can design a tour that meets your physical needs.
Because every tour is planned for each client, we have no set schedule. Contact us and we will work within your needs and timetable.
