Penguin Place Banner

Welcome to Penguin Place, we are a private conservation reserve dedicated to helping the
Yellow-eyed penguin. The Yellow-eyed penguin also known as Hoiho is the most endangered
penguin species. Our informative guided tours offer you the opportunity to contribute and visit a
working conservation programme.
With your support we are able to plant thousands of trees a year to regenerate native bush, build
nesting sites, trap predators, care for sick and injured penguins and carry out our own research
programme. It is hoped that through this work, the future of this rare and wonderful Yellow Eyed
Penguin will be assured.
Our tour begins with an interpretive introduction talk where you learn about the work we are doing
on the reserve and about the Yellow Eyed Penguin, as well as other species living in our reserve.
Next you will visit our Rehabilitation Center where we care for sick, starving and injured penguins (if
penguins are in care at the time of visit). This is the only place in New Zealand where you can see
the Yellow Eyed Penguin close up. Finally, a short bus ride takes you through regenerated bush into
our reserve where we continue on foot to experience all our reserve has to offer. Numerous species
reside within the reserve, including Yellow Eyed Penguins, Little (blue) Penguins, New Zealand Fur
Seals, Sea Lions, Shore & Land Birds, and more are often seen throughout our reserve. (Please
note, as these are wild animals we can never guarantee the opportunity to see animals in the wild.)
Viewing of wildlife can change from day to day, please do not hesitate to contact us for up to date
information on what is likely to be seen in our reserve.
