Orokonui Ecosanctuary is the largest predator free forest in the South Island providing safe habitat and conservation of endangered wildlife.
Walking tracks to suit all abilities allow for the observation of birds in their natural habitat including the takahe, South Island brown kiwi (sub species Haast Tokoeka), South Island saddleback, South Island robin, South Island kaka, rifleman, fern bird, tomtit, kereru, ruru (Owl), bellbird, tui, silvereye, brown creeper, fantail and grey warbler.
Just 20 kilometres north of Dunedin, Orokonui Ecosanctuary is restoring the podocarp forest to its pre-human state. Self guided walking is available from 9.30am to 4.30pm daily and bookings are required for guided tours with friendly, knowledgeable guides.
An award winning Visitor Centre provides a café, souvenir shop, displays and classroom.
