South Island Brown Kiwi (Includes Haast Tokoeka)(Tokoeka)

Species: Apteryx australis Shaw & Nodder

Sub Species: Apteryx australis australis Shaw & Nodder

Species occurs in the Soyh Island between Haast river to Awawata river and Fiordland. Distinct populations are the result of postulated recent and ongoing population declines. Differences letween distinct populations not recognised by taxonomic distinction have been treated as distinct management units by the Department of Conservation.  The sub-species known as Haast Tokoeka can now be seen at the Orokonui Ecosanctuary near Dunedin.
