New Zealand's most famous kakapo, Sirocco, takes occaisional holidays at various well protected predator-proof wildlife reserves before returning to his Island home in the Marlborough Sounds. There are a few of these "mainland island santuary's" in New Zealand which are large natural areas surrounded by a predator-proof fence.
Sirocco, rose to fame after pouncing on zoologist Mark Carwardine during a BBC documentary in 2009, he is one of only 126 kakapo known to exist and has a special bond with humans because he was hand-raised without the presence of other kakapo.
