NEW ZEALAND BIRDING NETWORK

There are three subspecies of this delightful bird, the North Island subspecies is pictured here. They belong to the new world robins the Eopsaltriidae, and are not related to the Northern Hemisphere robins. The New Zealand robin is endemic. Robins prefer mature native forests and are patchily distributed throughout New Zealand. On some islands they are extremely common, for example on Motuara Island in the Marlborough Sounds which we visit on our 'Aoteoroa' Tour we are almost walking on them on our trek to the top of the island. We don't of course!
